Irene Dohman

Brookings, SD


Irene Dohman was born on June 14, 1921, near Andover, SD, the daughter of Julius F. and Lucy Rose (Zimney) Dylla. She died on Tuesday, October 23, 2007, at Brookview Manor in Brookings at the age of 86.


Irene grew up on a farm near Andover. She received her education in Andover and was a graduate of the Andover High School. She was employed at Montomery Ward in Chicago, IL, a craft store and later at Minneapolis Moline in Minneapolis, MN. In 1944, she returned to South Dakota and was united in marriage to William G. Dohman on October 10, 1944. They lived on a farm near Andover until 1950, when they moved to a farm near Crocker, SD. They continued to farm until their retirement in 1981, when they moved to Waubay, SD. In 1999, they moved to Brookings, SD. William died on February 27, 2000, in Brookings.


She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Waubay, the Alter Society, American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW.


Irene is survived by her children Richard (Mary) Dohman of Chula Vista, CA, Thomas (Sandy) Dohman of Brookings, SD, George (Debbie) Dohman of the Twin Cities, MN, Leroy Dohman of Dover, DE, Duane (Dorothy) Dohman of Watertown, SD, Barbara Knutson of Brookings, SD; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; two brothers George (Dorothy) Dylla of Watertown, SD, Lawrence (Sharon) Dylla of Minneapolis, MN; three sisters Agnes Nelson of Lake Lillian, MN, Dorothy Eichton of Redwood Falls, MN and Helen (Ka) VanDover of Littleton, CO.


She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers, one son-in-law, B.W. Knutson.

Visitation: 2:00pm until 4:00pm, Sunday
Rudes Funeral Home Brookings, SD

Interment: St. Ottos Catholic Cemetery
