Irene L. Goodfellow, 89, of Brookings, SD died Saturday, May 16, 2009 at United Retirement Center, Brookings. Memorial Services have been set for 1:30pm Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Preston Christian Church, rural Bruce, SD. Visitation will be 4:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, May 19, 2009 with a 6:30pm Prayer Service at Rudes Funeral Home, Brookings.
Irene Louise Ullman was born September 14, 1919, in Bruce, SD to Percy and Jennie (Gile) Ullman. Irene spent her early years and received her education in rural school near Volga, SD and was a graduate of the Volga High School in 1937. She continued her education at Williamett University in Salem, OR.
Irene was united in marriage to Horace Goodfellow on March 31, 1938 in Vancouver, WA. After their marriage, they farmed for many years in the Bruce area. During those years, she housed several school teachers and hired men. Irene and Horace owned a community country store called the Preston Market that Irene managed while Horace worked as an electrician. From 1958 to 1983, she was employed at SDSU for the Dean of Home Economics. Horace died on February 11, 1977 in Sioux Falls, SD.
She was a member of Preston Christian Church, where she was the church organist for several years. She was a founding member of the Prestonite Extension Club, and a member of the (NDAR) National Daughters of American Revolution. Irene was also very active in 4-H and served as a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, baking and always had an open door policy where everyone was welcome.
Irene is survived by her two sons, Howard (Barb) Goodfellow of Brookings, SD Gordon (Marie) Goodfellow of Bruce, SD; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Eileen (Lowell) Wikoff of Woodburn, OR, one sister-in-law, Stella Ullman of Kelowna, British Columbia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Horace, a sister, Bette Ullman Lukins, brother, Gordon Ullman and daughter-in-law, Trudy Goodfellow.
