Jeannette H. VanKlei was born on June 9, 1928, in Rushmore, MN the daughter of Eli and Gertrude (DeLong) VanKlei. She died on Wednesday, October 3, 2007, at Brookview Manor at the age of 79.
She grew up and attended Moody County Rural School, south of Elkton. Jeannette stayed on the family farm with her parents until she was united in marriage to Gilbert Asp on February 26, 1947 at the Church of God parsonage.
They made their home in Arlington where she worked at home while Gilbert worked at the Ford Dealership in Arlington. In 1958 they moved to Brookings and Jeannette worked at A&B Garage where they were in partnership in the business. She was very diligent and hardworking to help where needed by picking up parts and doing other duties at the shop. They later sold the business in 1991. Jeannette and Gilbert recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
Jeannette and Gilbert were very honored to have cared for seventeen years for her brother, Eli VanKlei, Jr. who had MS.
Jeannettes hobbies included sewing, listening to polka music, attending tractor shows, visiting with neighbors, gardening, collecting dolls and cookbooks.
Jeannette is survived by her husband, Gilbert of Volga; foster brother, Martin (Barbara) Bosch of Brookings; brothers-in-law, Theis Mittan of Brookings, Theodore Asp of Hayward, WI, Irvin Asp of Spring Valley, MN, Duane Asp of Hayward, WI, Roger Asp of TN; sisters-in-law Dorothy and Mildred Asp both of Woodstock, IL, Helen Heimrich of Play Center, KS; one nephew, Raymond Mittan of Brookings and special friends, Bill and Kathy Heylens of Volga.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Ann Mittan, brothers, Benjamin and Eli Jr.
