John Geardink
Brookings, South Dakota
John Geardink was born on July 31, 1913 in Hennipin, Illinois the son of John and Elizabeth (Eylders) Geardink. He died on Monday, December 29, 2003 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls at the age of 90 years.
John moved with his parents at the age of five to Elkton, SD where he resided for two years before moving to a farm in Deuel County, SD. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Bublitz on December 18, 1937 in Milbank, SD. After their marriage they moved to Lake County where they farmed for five years. They then moved to Brookings County and farmed until their retirement in 1977 when they moved to Brookings. After his retirement he worked on a neighboring farm for eight years.
He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially spending time with his family and friends.
John is survived by his wife Dorothy of Brookings; one son Roger Geardink (Gloria) of El Paso, Texas; one daughter Linda Metz (Craig) of Marietta, Georgia; four grandchildren Barry Handegard, Brad Handegard, Jaime Dix (Brendan), and Ryan Geardink; four great grandchildren Justin, Meghan and Parker Handegard, Carina Dix; and one sister Elizabeth Williams of Rapid City, SD.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Charles, three sisters Anna, JoHanna, Carolyn, one great grandson Jarod and one granddaughter-in-law Brenda.
