Marvella L. Anderson Foster, 93, of Brookings, SD, died Monday, October 06, 2008 at United Retirement Center where she had been a resident for the past 2 ? years. Funeral Services have been set for 10:30am Thursday, October 9, 2008 at the United Church of Christ, Brookings. Graveside Services will be 1:30pm Thursday, October 9, 2008 at Arlington City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at Rude?s Funeral Home, Brookings. Rude?s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Marvella L. Dahl the first born of Paul and Hannah (Nelson) Dahl was born June 23, 1915 in Arlington, SD. She was raised on the family farm and educated in the Arlington Country Schools. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith.
She was united in marriage to Arie VanderWaal on November 9, 1935; he passed away January 3, 1953. She was then united in marriage to Henry Anderson on September 1, 1956, he passed away, September 7, 1982; she then was united in marriage to George Foster December 21, 1985 and he passed away suddenly on January 7, 1986.
Marvella worked hard on the family farm. She then worked at the Arlington City Caf?. She also was a Grocery Clerk and an Apartment Manager. She also loved her position as a well loved foster grandparent. Marvella lived in California for 25 years moving back to Brookings in 1998.
She will be remembered for the love of her siblings and children, her quick witt and great sense of humor. She also enjoyed crafts, crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren and playing BINGO.
Marvella is survived by her four children, Shirley (Ray) Welch of Toronto, SD, Eugene (Judy) VanderWaal of Longview, TX, Marilyn (Steve) McKinney of Arcata, CA and Carolyn (Pete) Powell of Brookings; daughter-in-law, Nena VanderWaal of Estelline, SD; two wonderful step-daughters, Yvonne (Jim) Bower of Barstow, CA; Beverly Westall of San Antonio, TX; 22 grandchildren, 50 great and great great grandchildren; one sister, Doris Alfson of Brookings; two sisters-in-law, Orlene Dahl of Arlington and Gladys Dahl Fallon of Ramona, SD and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Arie, Henry and George; her son, Dennis; three brothers, Vernon, Kingsley and Paul Jr; three sisters, Hazel Johnson, Pearl Moe and Bev Trygstad; two grandsons, one granddaughter, one son-in-law, one sister-in-law and three brothers-in-law.
A special Thank You to all of the nurses, nurses aids, the pastor and everyone that helped with Mom?s care at United Retirement Center. God bless you all!
