Nancy Jane Johnson, 63, of Volga, SD, passed away unexpectedly Saturday November 14, 2009 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral Services are 1:00pm Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, November 16, 2009 at Rude's Funeral Home in Brookings.
Nancy Jane Pickering was born March 21, 1946 in Volga, SD to Wilfred and Velma (Larson) Pickering. She graduated from Arlington High School in 1964.
Nancy was united in marriage Dennis Johnson on February 12, 1965. The Johnson's lived briefly in Madison, Watertown, the Twin Cities and Brookings before moving to their permanent home in Volga in 1974 where they raised their children and were currently enjoying their retirement. Nancy was an employee of the Brookings Hospital for 26 years before retiring in 2006.
Nancy was dedicated to her family, friends and her job. She enjoyed spending time with her two grandsons, traveling, sporting events of all types, canning, baking, and crocheting. Her greatest joy was sharing with others. She truly loved her special vacations and visits with her grandsons, as well as her Tuesday coffee time with her friends. She lived life to the fullest and always looked forward to the next day with optimism and courage.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis, a daughter, Charlotte (Barry) Kempfert, Hudson, WI, a son, Stephen and his special friend Patricia Lemke, Mayer, MN. She is also survived by two grandsons, Jacob and Benjamin Kempfert, her parents, Wilfrid and Velma Pickering, two brothers, Keith (Jane) Pickering and Don Pickering, four sisters, Joyce Pickering, Mary (Tom) Nemitz, Deb (Paul) Courteau, and Linda (David) McGirr, one brother-in-laws Dean (Mary) Johnson, Eugene (Cheryl) Johnson, one sister-in laws Kathie (Lonnie) Holt, several nieces and nephews and a host of true friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sheila, parents-in-law Don and Cecelia Johnson, and brother-in-laws Jerry and Larry Johnson.
