June Loretta Steen was born on June 20, 1934 in Brookings, SD, the daughter of Henry and Lena Steen. She attended the Brookings Schools through her senior year, graduating in 1952.
June was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 16, during her junior year. She suffered many years of intense pain, which eventually left her handicapped and in a wheel chair. She loved life and never gave up hope that someday she would walk again. In 1973, June was able to have bilateral knee replacement surgery in Minneapolis. She worked so hard and diligently with the help of her mother Lena, and a brother, Erwin exercising daily for 1 ½ years. She then attained the goal she had prayed and worked so hard for, she could walk again with the help of crutches and then eventually on her own. June felt so blessed and happy and had many wonderful years. She was also able to work for her late brother, Leon, who was an accountant in Brookings and this brought her added joy.
However, the last years of her life diminished her physical abilities and she again had to be in a wheelchair. All her life she never complained, always enjoying and sharing in the lives of those around her. Everyone loved June, including family, friends and people who met her for the first time. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Her family told her that she was an angel of God on earth, always being kind and loving to each person she knew. June always said, “Where there is a will, there is a way, and where there is faith, there is hope.”
She is now at peace in Heaven and will never be forgotten and always in the hearts of those who loved her.
June is survived by three sisters, Elaine (Don) Asbjornson, Joan (Vern) Isham, Betty (Reg) Wegner; two brothers, Rueben (Mary Alice) Steen and John (Christl) Steen; two sisters-in-law, Angie Steen and Donna Steen-Wallum along with 30 nieces and nephews and 53 great nieces and nephews. She loved every one of us, and we loved her also.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Lena; five brothers, Erwin, Leon, Stafford, Ivan, and Ray Steen and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Steen.
Memorials may be directed to the First Lutheran Church or to the United Living Community.
