Life Legacy


Norman D. Martin, 94, of Brookings, died Friday, January 25, 2013 at Stoneybrook Suites in Brookings. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, January 31, 2013 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Norman D. Martin was born on November 20, 1918 in Chamberlain, South Dakota the son of William and Winifred (Powers) Martin.

Norm spent his early years and received his education in Pukwana, South Dakota and was a graduate of the Pukwana High School in 1936. He continued his education at SDSU in Brookings and graduated in 1942 with a degree in Ag. In 1942, he entered the United States Air Force. Norm was united in marriage to Marjorie B. Alleman on March 26, 1942.

After his discharge from the Air Force in 1946, he was employed at the Extension Service in Aberdeen, SD as an Associate County Agent. In 1947, he moved to Brookings and continued his employment with the extension service. In 1948, he went to work for Standard Oil, and continued his employment there until his retirement in 1975. Norm was very proud of serving on the Brookings Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years. Marjorie died on August 8, 1997 in Brookings.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookings and the Golden K. He was also a member of the American Legion, the BPOElks, and the VFW. He especially enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and spending time at his cabin on Lake Poinsett.

Norm is survived by one son Jim (Reyna) Martin of Brookings, SD; two daughters Nancy (Craig) Byers of Isanti, MN and Bonnie (Jerry) Langum of Spearfish, SD; seven grandchildren, Ann (Ryan) Overby of Brookings, Shannon (Matt) Hof of Altoona, IA, Trace Martin of Minneapolis, MN, Stephen (Amy) Byers of Sioux Falls, SD, Micah (Laura) Byers of Ham Lake, MN, Lindy Langum of Seattle, WA, Tanner Langum of Anchorage, AK; eight great grandchildren; one brother in law Jack Primm of Rapid City, South Dakota and a close friend Donna McLagan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Willard and Bob and two sisters Ann and Marlys.
